A woman, 104, lies about age so that she can be on Facebook. Marguerite Joseph of Mich. is on the popular social networking site but the year she was born -- 1908 -- doesn't register for some reason. On Feb. 20, the Clarion Ledger reported that Joseph has been "99-years-old" for the past two years because Facebook changes "1908" to "1928" automatically.
Gail Marlow, Joseph's granddaughter, does her best to keep her grandmother up to date with messages and other Facebook happenings. However, she would like for her grandmother's age to be listed appropriately.
The woman, 104, who lies about age is not mad about it per say. Her granddaughter blames it on a "glitch" and hopes that Facebook will fix the problem soon. A spokesperson has already apologized for the error and has said that the company is "working to fix a problem limiting used of pre-1910 birth dates" (via the Clarion Ledger).
Joseph seems like a pretty "hip" grandmother, being on Facebook and all, but her age has left her legally blind and without her full hearing. Nonetheless, she wants to take part in Facebook -- and she would love to be able to let all of her friends know that she's 104 -- not 99.
An 104-year-old woman shouldn't have to lie about her age, especially not on Facebook. It's definitely an accomplishment and it's amazing to even want to have a Facebook account at that age.
