British actress Emily Blunt, 26, who stars in the movie Wolfman opening in theaters today, Friday February 12 2010, has spoken out about airbrushing and the unrealistic expectation that all woman are the stick-thin size of her character Emily Charlton, who she played in the movie The Devil Wears Prada (2006). Many women aspire to the role models depicted by models and actresses, even though many are not naturally thin.
Emily Blunt on airbrushing and curvy figures
In an interview with the LA Times magazine, she said:
“I hate when your legs are three times the length they actually are. It's unfair to represent an image of yourself if it's not true. They're going to see what you look like on film anyway, so why try to cover all your wobbly bits in a photo.”
However, Emily Blunt did say that she was “encouraged” to lose weight for the character of Emily Charlton, in the movie The Devil Wears Prada, because she was “playing a character who was edge-of-ill thin.”
Other curvy women in the news
Both the world of fashion and celebrities put pressure on women to maintain figures that are often unrealistic. Kourtney Kardashian was quick to speak out recently about airbrushed photos of her which appeared in OK magazine, indicating that she had already lost the weight gained in her pregnancy with baby Mason, when in fact she has yet still to lose it. Kendra Wilkinson appeared on the cover of OK magazine this week apparently flaunting her new 'trim' figure after the birth of baby Hank in December 2009.
Other women who have been under fire in the world of fashion for 'controversial' figures and airbrushing are Lizzie Miller, the slightly 'overweight' fashion model who appeared naked in Glamour magazine last year and ex-Ralph Lauren model Filippa Hamilton, who was allegedly fired for being 'overweight' too.
Although Emily Blunt is most certainly not 'overweight', she seems resolute not to bow to the pressure of airbrushed photos and crash diets to achieve the 'perfect' figure; the average woman in the U.S. actually is a size 14, 5' 4” and weighs between 108 and 144 pounds.
