Wolf Pack to open season at high noon

The Nevada Wolf Pack will open its 2014 football season with a hot August afternoon contest.

The Wolf Pack announced Friday that the Aug. 30 season opener against Southern Utah will kick off at noon. The game might be the only afternoon contest of the year at Mackay Stadium. Southern Utah, ironically, was the visiting team for the first night game at the current Mackay Stadium location in 2003, also on Aug. 30.

Four of the Pack's six home games are currently scheduled for a night kickoff.

Southern Utah, a member of the Football Championship Subdivision (the former Division I-AA), was beaten by the Pack, 24-23, at Mackay Stadium in 2003 in Nevada head coach Chris Tormey's final season.

The Wolf Pack will also host Washington State (Sept. 5), Boise State (Oct. 4), Colorado State (Oct. 11), San Diego State (Nov. 1) and Fresno State (Nov. 22) at Mackay Stadium this year. The Washington State, Boise State, Colorado State and San Diego State games are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Fresno State kickoff has yet to be determined.

Kickoff times are subject to television schedules and can all still be changed.

The Wolf Pack, which finished 4-8 in coach Brian Polian's first season in 201, also opened last season's home schedule against a FCS team (UC Davis). The Pack beat Davis 36-7.

The Aug. 30 opener is the earliest the Pack will open a home season since it beat Grambling 49-13 on Aug. 30, 2008. The Pack has opened a season at home or on the road as early as Aug. 30 just three other times (2008 against Grambling, 2003 against Southern Utah and 1997 against Colorado State).

Wolf Pack season tickets start at $99 for adults and $45 for 8th graders and younger. Call (775) 348-PACK for tickets.
