Nevada Wolf Pack third baseman Austin Byler has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week.
It is the first Mountain West Player of the Week honor for the Wolf Pack since joining the conference this season.
Fresno State's Derick Velazquez was named the conference's Pitcher of the Week.
Byler, a sophomore from Peoria, Ariz., went 8-for-15 (.615) last week as the Wolf Pack went 3-1 against Sacramento state (0-1) and Holy Cross (3-0).
The left-hander delivered game-winning hits twice in the Holy Cross series. In Game One of Saturday’s doubleheader, Byler was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI and scored a run in the 8-1 victory. In the second game he tied a Wolf Pack record by hitting three home runs and driving in nine runs. His three-run homer in the eighth inning of Game Two was the game-winner (12-10) for the doubleheader sweep. Byler was 4-for-5 in the second game with three runs scored.
On Sunday Byler drilled a game-winning bases-loaded RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to seal a 7-6 victory. It was his only hit of the game after being walked twice. He finished the week with a slugging percentage of 1.538 and on-base percentage of .706.
Velazquez, a sophomore from Los Banos, Calif., pitched a complete game to give the Bulldogs a 5-1 win on Saturday over USC in his third career start. Velazquez, allowed seven hits and had a shut out with two outs in the ninth inning but he walked in a run.
