The Nevada Wolf Pack men's basketball team seems to be in a free fall.
The Wolf Pack suffered its most humiliating defeat in over two years Wednesday night, losing to the Boise State Broncos 73-47.
The Pack has now lost four in a row, seven of its last eight and 11 of its last 14 to fall to 12-15 overall and 3-10 in the Mountain West. Boise State, which lost to the Pack in Reno less than a month ago, 75-59, improved to 19-8, 7-6.
The Wolf Pack literally reached a new low against the Broncos. The Pack set season lows for field goals (10), field goal attempts (38), rebounds (21), assists (4) and field goal percentage (.263) in the loss. The 47 points are the second fewest the Pack has scored in a game this year (they lost 56-43 at Oregon on Dec 31).
The Pack also set other lows in the game . . .
- The 26-point blowout is the Pack's biggest loss since a 90-60 defeat at Washington on Dec. 22, 2010.
- It is the Pack's biggest loss in a conference game in over a decade, since a 29-point drubbing (93-64) at UTEP on Jan. 17, 2002.
- It is the Pack's biggest loss to Boise State since an 89-61 setback on Feb. 27, 1988.
The Pack was never really in the game at Boise State. The Broncos exploded out to a 16-3 lead just six minutes into the game.
Malik Story made the Pack's first field goal attempt, a 3-pointer for a 3-2 lead less than a minute into the game. And it was all downhill from there for the Pack.
A Kenny Buckner lay-up gave Boise a 30-10 lead with 5:28 to go in the first half. Story then hit a 3-pointer and a jumper less than a minute apart to cut Boise's lead to 30-15 with 4:25 to go.
The Broncos, though, led by 15 (35-20) at the half and the Pack could never get any closer in the second half. Deonte Burton, who finished with a Pack-high 13 points, scored six points in garbage time on a pair of threes in the final seven minutes.
Story, who had eight points, combined with Burton to make 5-of-19 shots. The rest of the Wolf Pack team also made 5-of-19 shots combined.
Almost half the Pack points (23) came from the free throw line. The Wolf Pack was 23-of-26 from the line.
Anthony Drmic led Boise State was 26 points, 19 in the second half. Ryan Watkins had 14 points and Jeff Elorriaga had nine.
