WKU is keeping it interesting for the fans down the stretch. They beat Florida Atlantic in overtime 78-69 at Boca Raton on Thursday night.
This was the second overtime game, and it had been a dozen years since the Toppers played back-to-back overtime contests. This is another first for the fans this season - the first time a WKU squad has won both OT games while on the road.
This moves the Hilltoppers closer to the #3 seed they are hoping for in the Sun Belt Conference tournament. Their conference record moves to 11-5. WKU is one game behind Middle Tennessee and Troy for first place in the Sun Belt East Division with one game to play.
The tie-breakers are mind-boggling because of the log jam in the Sun Belt this year.
Regulation ended with 61-61. Steffphon Pettigrew had two chances to put WKU ahead with 1.5 seconds left on the clock while standing at the charity stripe, but he missed both.
AJ Slaugther stepped up again in the overtime stanza, taking just a few seconds to score in the OT and starting a 11-4 run to put the Hilltoppers in charge.
Slaughter scored 13 of his team-high 19 points after halftime including seven during the decisive overtime run, the last with 1:20 to play to put WKU up 72-67.
