Today Oct. 22, 2013 Wizards of the Coast announced in an article by Mike Turian on DailyMTG.com that they'll be reprinting the Power Nine (aka the "P9") in their upcoming "Magic: The Gathering" expert expansion set "Vintage Masters." The set, which will retail for a whopping MSRP of $6.99 per booster pack, will allow players to own a piece of "Magic" history with new art, and for the first time in the new modern card frame. There will even be premium foil versions of Ancestral Recall, Time Walk, and friends.
According to Turian:
We know that the Vintage format for Magic Online demands to be done the right way. With Vintage Masters, we are striving to make available on Magic Online every relevant Magic card in existence for the Vintage format.
Before Vintage Masters, many players will have never had the experience of playing a match of Vintage Magic. Vintage Masters will contain a number of older Magic cards, many of which are crucial to the Vintage format. This includes the nine cornerstone cards called the Power Nine. These nine cards are perhaps the most famous in Magic's history, cards like Black Lotus and Time Walk. If you've never owned a piece of the Power Nine, you're not alone, but with the release of Vintage Masters, Magic Online players will have the chance to possess the power!
No, R&D hasn't been hit by a bus and the Reserved List hasn't been abolished. The Power Nine will only be appearing in a special "Magic Online" only set that's unredeemable.
Each booster pack of "Vintage Masters" features:
- 10 commons
- 3 uncommons
- 1 rare or mythic rare
- 1 premium foil card (any rarity, including the extremely rare premium foil Power Nine card), OR 1 Power Nine card
The set will also feature new artwork for many other eternal cards in the set.
There's many details that are left out of the announcement. What is the distribution of Power Nine? How many cards are in the set? Will the duel lands be reprinted again? What about Library of Alexandria? More importantly, how about Force of Will? It's the card that's often referred to as "the glue that holds the format together." We'll have plenty of time to speculate about these and many more questions, along with preparing our wallets for the "Vintage Masters" prerelease events, which will take place June 13-16, 2014. "Vintage Masters" will go on sale June 16, 2014.
What will you cast with your foil Black Lotus?
