Wizards of the Coast overhauls 'Magic: The Gathering' Grand Prix bye system

Today May 29, 2014 Wizards of the Coast announced a major change to Magic: The Gathering's bye system for Grand Prix events. Starting on Aug. 30, 2014 Grand Prix byes will be awarded based upon a player's yearly Planeswalker Points total instead of their seasonal totals. Winners of Pro Tour Qualifier events will no longer receive 1,000 Planeswalker Points. Additionally, Wizards of the Coast has also decided to eliminate the ability for most players to earn three byes.

According to Wizards of the Coast:

With too many players having byes, the value of an individual bye is lessened. As an outcome of this reassessment, three-round byes based on Planeswalker Points will no longer be offered at Grand Prix.

In order to receive a bye at a Magic: The Gathering Grand Prix as of Aug. 30, 2014 you'll need:

  • 1,300 Planeswalker Points for one bye.
  • 2,250 Planeswalker Points for two byes.

You'll still be able to earn byes at a Grand Prix Trial event.

Gold or Platinum members of the Pro Players Club, along with Pro Tour Hall of Fame members will be able to receive three byes.

These changes make it easier for those attending multiple Grand Prix events year round, as they won't feel as if they're always grinding for byes. For those who only compete in one or two events a year, the loss that potential third bye may be a vital blow.
