So this past weekend was Wizard World Philly Comic-Con. As most of you know Wizard Magazine is now focused on holding many comic con events through out the year in many different states. This past weekend saw many fans and artist takeover the Philadelphia convention center. The two biggest names at the show weren’t even comic book artist or writers. They were two big name actors in the comic book/pop culture world. These actors were none other than Billy Dee Williams aka Lando Calrissian and Bruce Campbell from Evil Dead and Army of Darkness. Plus along side these two great actors were many other actors in attendance from the likes of Norman Reedus of Boondock Saints fame to Margot Kidder the original Lois Lane, along with many actors from The Walking Dead TV series. So you could say this comic con focused more on actors than comic books. Well I can say that is true. The dealer tables didn’t have that great of a selection. Sure there were many tables selling Golden Age, graphic novels and current comic books. It just felt like there weren’t as many good dealer tables as some of the past Wizard World Philly shows. There were some good deals on current comics and tradepaper backs, but overall the dealer section was a bit limited.
The Artist Alley section had some really good talent. Here you can always find some good independent comic books and t-shirts. You had some great professional talent doing sketches all day long like Humberto Ramos who draws an excellent Spider-Man. He seemed busy all day long. Plus here in Artist Alley you might find a local or self published you will fall in love with.
I checked out a few people in Artist Alley. I first stopped by PLB Comics table, a local Eastern Shore, Maryland comic book company. They were selling and promoting their title The Fall an action packed tale of masked vigilante. They even had an exclusive comic just for Wizard World Philly. It was a pretty bad ass looking cover. If you want to check out more from PLB Comics go to their website here: http://www.plbcomics.com/
My next stop was at Red Stylo Media, here they were promoting and selling their comic book Azteca: A story about a vigilante serial killer who thinks he can stop the world from ending in 2012. Instead of killing innocents, Nicho stalks drug cartel soldiers and other criminals, offering them as bloody sacrifice to forgotten Aztec gods. It is a pretty interesting storyline. My last stop was the table for Dark Age/ A Graphic Novel. I got to meet the creators Mada Shaye and Vin Shaye. Dark Age is a dark and original graphic novel. They bring you to the slums and beyond. Plus with the purchase of the graphic novel I got a pretty awesome looking Dark Age t-shirt. To check out more of Dark Age go to their website: http://www.darkageepic.com/
