It’s not too late to experience the explosive thrill of powerboat racing this weekend at the 2011 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout. The water-scorching event is heralded as the largest unsanctioned boat race in the US and has been listed by Powerboat magazine as one of the eight “must see” boating events.
High performance monohulls and catamarans come from around the country to compete on the one-mile drag, with last year’s 22nd annual event drawing more than 75,000 people for a fun-filled week of activities benefitting 20 different charities. Happenings include a golf tournament, treasure hunt, fireworks, musical performances and much more.
While some of the excitement has already taken place this year — the event started on Saturday, August 20, and runs through Sunday, August 28 — boaters from St. Louis and the surrounding areas can still make it to the lake in time to witness the main races and participate in the following events:

Last year, it was the record setting-performance of David Scott and John Tomlinson of Nauti-Marine that captured the coveted “Top Gun” title, as they blasted past more than 6,000 boats lining the course at a speed of 208 mph. Be there this year to see walks away a winner — besides all the volunteers and charities who take part in this amazing Midwest boating event, that is!
