With 'True Blood' and 'Mad Men', cable becoming broadcast

Do you remember the days when major network TV shows tended to be what people talked about the next day at the office? Well, those days seem to be gone now that "Lost" is over. If you look at the summer schedule across the board, many of the top-rated shows -- from "America's Got Talent" to "So You Think You Can Dance" and "The Bachelorette" -- are programs that we've all seen for many years already. Unless something unexpected happens, the "wow" factor of these shows is gone.

Instead, we are seeing the mass exodus to cable --a place where shows can be edgier, concepts can be riskier, and creators can truly exercise their vision without the danger of censorship. "The Closer" for TNT and "Burn Notice" for USA are two of the summer's highest-rated scripted shows, and they don't come with a basic antenna.

The best example of "cable taking over" (at least for the summer) comes with Sunday night's lineup. While AMC is celebrating the season premiere for "Mad Men", HBO has new episodes of "True Blood", "Hung", and "Entourage". NBC and CBS are airing some reruns, while ABC is opting for original content that is struggling in the ratings.
