The Colorado Avalanche have lost yet another player to injury; announcing Monday that goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere is out with back spasms.

To replace Giguere, the team has recalled goaltender Sami Aittokallio from the Lake Erie Monsters. Aittokallio has played in 19 games this season for the Monsters, going 8-8-1 with a 2.83 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage.

The 21-year-old Aittokallio played in one game for the Avs last season, allowing two goals on 25 shots to the Los Angeles Kings before being forced to leave the contest with cramps.

As for Giguere, the injury comes on the heels of being called out by coach Patrick Roy following a 4-3 loss to the Calgary Flames on Jan. 6.

"I think Jiggy should have played better tonight,” said Roy. “He hasn't played well in the last four or five games. He needs to be better, and we need him playing better. Period."

Defenseman Karl Stollery was also reassigned to the Monsters, as Tyson Barrie (shoulder) and Nick Holden (personal reasons) are both ready to return to the lineup. Stollery made his NHL debut Saturday against the Minnesota Wild, finishing the contest with two penalty minutes and a plus-one rating.

Forward David van der Gulik was also placed on injured reserve after suffering a head injury Friday night against the New York Islanders; his first since being recalled from Lake Erie.

The Avalanche will return to action Tuesday against the Chicago Blackhawks. Center Paul Stastny (injured in Saturday’s contest) will be revaluated Tuesday morning, but could play against the Blackhawks.
