On the national level casino gambling was up in 2011 compared to the year before. But according to industry reports compiled by the USA Today the results on a state by state level are mixed.
Delaware's neighbor to north, Pennsylvania, had annual gross gaming revenue top $3 billion for the first time with a 21.6% increase over 2010. Gambling grew in Pennsylvania with the addition of more casinos and table games added in 2010 helping to increase revenue.
As Pennsylvania gains, New Jersey and Delaware had declines in gaming revenues.
Is internet gambling in Delaware's future?
With Pennsylvania expanding and growing their gaming industry, as Delaware's gambling revenues decreases, the question that comes to mind is, what will be Delaware's next move,
One thing that Delaware offers over Pennsylvania is sports gambling. While they lost their bid to offer a full line of sports betting, in 2009 Delaware began to offer parlay wagering on professional football games.
The future of online gambling has been debated often in the past year. A ruling on the federal Wire Act of 1961 opened the door for the sales of lottery tickets online to person's physically located in the state.
Nevada allows online sports betting within its borders. Could Delaware be next?
Likewise, with speculation that online gambling on poker could become legal in the near future. will Delaware look to jump on that internet gambling bandwagon as well?
Time will tell if Delaware takes to the internet to expand their stake in the gaming industry.
