Wishes for 2014

Happy New Year, Chicago gardeners! Looking forward to the growing season of the new year of 2014 fills gardeners with hopeful promise and grand expectations. As the seed catalogs begin arriving, hearts are filled with joy. Fortunately, indoor gardening will fill the void until the season arrives.

May your 2014 garden provide for your needs for food, beauty and peacefulness. May your fruits and vegetables blossom, grow and ripen to perfection. May your annuals and perennials color your garden in splendor. May all your garden experiments work for the benefit of your garden, neighborhood, community and the city of Chicago.

If you received new garden tools and equipment during the giving season, may these items help your garden to be more beautiful and productive. May they ease your garden labors, freeing you to relax and enjoy your special space. May your Chicago Garden Notebook become your most valuable resource.

When uninvited plants and insects invade your garden, may all your efforts to protect it be successful. May these protections be friendly to the environment so it can continue to flourish for everyone. May the pests never return.

If you decide to start or join a garden club, may you find an abundance of individuals to participate in your organization. May your club connect with community and city organizations so Chicago remains the “Garden City.”

The gardening year ahead is filled with wishes, hopes and promises. Enjoy your new year.

Live long and well—garden.
