The “List of Words to be Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness” has once again been published. In a report dated Jan. 1, the list has been published by Michigan's Lake Superior State University.
The Boston Globe also reported on Jan. 1 that there are a dozen words that made the wish list. Nominations for the “List of Words to be Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness” were nominated from Canada, the United States and other countries.
Making the wish list for banned words for 2012 include “spoiler alert,” “trending” and “bucket list.” Other words included in the banned word list are “guru,” “job creators” and “double down.” Not to be outdone, social media got involved and “YOLO” (the abbreviated form of “you only live once”) is also on the banned word list.
“I wish someone could ban the word 'Kardashian' from the English language,” Steve McDowell, from Moore, said. “Now that they have little 'Kimye' [the nickname for Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's unborn baby] on the way, it will only get worse. Everyone will be talking about Kimye. I'm already of sick of little Kimye. My wife wants 'calories,' 'carbohydrates' and 'fats' banned as well.”
Topping the list of banned words, getting the more votes than any other word, was “fiscal cliff.” That word seemed to be on the tongues of most Americans, seeing American taxpayers were only hours away from taking that leap off the fiscal cliff before a tentative compromise was reached by legislatures and Barack Obama.
“This is a fun way to make fun of out First Amendment right to freedom of speech,” McDowell continued. “Although we have the right to say just about anything we want, I'd love to see 'hate' banned from our lips and our hearts. I think that word should top the list, even though 'fiscal cliff' is a great word to get rid of.”
In the 38 years that the “List of Words to be Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness” has been published, Lake Superior State University has “banished” about 900 words or phrases.
