January 2013 President Obama nationally broadcasted on national news networks his support of a gun control plan given to Congress for consideration (Fox Report, CBS Evening News and The Situation Room). Many Oklahomans were shocked by the proposed plan; view all gun control or Arms ban in direct violation of the Bill of Rights, US Constitution. The majority in Oklahoma want to possess and bear Arms. They felt the US Executive Branch should be open to other alternatives instead of a gun control plan with a firearm ban.
Granted some Oklahomans’ happiness and security does not rely on firearm possession. Many have taken martial arts, self defense classes, installed security systems, possess other types of weapons or have some other form of protection. These Oklahomans see guns as a luxury instead of necessity, but still stand firm in favoring the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights. A small minority in Oklahoma agree with the US Executive Branch’s current stand.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) is renowned for promoting gun safety and responsible firearm usage. The NRA favors the protection of the Bill of Rights in the US Constitution, especially the Second Amendment:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
There are Oklahomans who regard the NRA’s position as pro-America; some are open about NRA membership. They do not comprehend why Washington DC would discuss let alone consider any form of gun control or Arms ban since the Bill of Rights prohibits any infringement on citizen Arms possession or bearing. They believe banning specific firearms or having gun control laws does not increase public health and safety.
Statistically criminals prefer to approach people not carrying protective Arms. It is easier to rob or do harm to someone who cannot protect themselves. Having a firearm handy has prevented Oklahomans from being robbed, raped or murdered from criminals who mistook them for easy prey (per Oklahoma City Channel 9, Evening News broadcasts, January 2012 – 2013). These reported incidents covered a wide range of ages. The innocents involved expressed how relieved they were to have Arms available for their protection; prevented the negative outcome planned by the criminal.
Oklahoma residents who legally carry firearms are very responsible. They are extremely careful; do their best to keep Arms out of the reach of minors. Many Oklahomans have taken firearm safety classes to learn how to properly handle and care for them. Oklahomans understand the dangerous aspects of Arms, especially if in irresponsible, criminal or unknowledgeable hands.
The best methods for reducing negative gun handling is through advocating for proper Arms handling and safety education, plus strict background checks to prevent criminals and diagnosed mentally ill people from illegally purchasing firearms. Oklahomans realize these wise measures enhance public happiness, health and safety without conflicting with the Bill of Rights. Most Oklahomans believe positive Arms keeping and bearing begins with common sense. Enjoy the day!
