Wisconsin taxpayers may face ID verification quiz for filing

Fraud takes no holidays, especially when it comes to tax season.

Taxpayers across the Badger State may be required to complete identity verification procedures in 2014, as the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) implements a new safeguard against fraud.

“DOR is focused on preventing identity theft and protecting taxpayers,” explained Richard Chandler, Wisconsin DOR Secretary, in an official January 8 statement. “Identity theft and [tax] refund fraud are two of the top cybercrimes.”

Randomly selected taxpayers will receive Wisconsin DOR letters with instructions for completing an Identity Verification quiz. Taken online or by phone, the quiz includes four multiple-choice questions. Each individual will have two chances to pass the quiz. Some may be required to supply additional documentation of identity.

Wisconsin DOR customer service representatives will be available to assist those who are unable to take the Identity Verification quiz on their own.

Tax season opens January 13 in Wisconsin, with processing underway. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) begins its 2014 filing season on January 31.
