Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Wisconsin Representative Zamarripa said in a statement “All Wisconsinites deserve the right to enjoy the benefits of marriage regardless of who they love.” He recently introduced a bill that would repeal the state's 2006 same-sex marriage ban. This ban was approved by voters with a 59% support rate, however today, the numbers have flipped and now 59% of people support equality.
In order for this bill to succeed, it would need to be approved twice by state legislators and then be voted on by Wisconsin citizens. "There is a huge shift, and every day it continues to swing toward equality," Zamarripa said.
The American Civil Liberties Union have filed a federal lawsuit against the State of Wisconsin challenging the ban in federal court. Both this new proposed bill and this lawsuit bring hope to Wisconsinites for equality.
Gay people are our friends, family, doctors, soldiers and loved ones, don't you think they deserve to share the magnificent commitment of marriage too? Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren once said "The freedom to marry has long been recognized as one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by free men." During the Loving v. Virginia case in 1967 where the Supreme Court struck down the interracial marriage ban, they cited "Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the State." The same applies to same-sex marriage.
Simply put, love is love and it belongs to everyone. Please consider signing the petition below and support equality for everybody.
