Wisconsin Council of Sport Fishing Organizations holds elections
On October 15, 2011, at their annual fall meeting, this time held in the Walleyes For Tomorrow building in Fond du Lac, the Wisconsin Council of Sport Fishing Organizations, WCSFO, held their biannual statewide elections.
WDSFO which has been around for several decades, represents the anglers viewpoint to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, WDNR.
Individuals, businesses and clubs related to sport fishing in Wisconsin are members. Businesses from bait shops to lure manufacturers to resorts are members. Fishing clubs make up the basis of the membership, as these clubs are the most focused on activities needing fixing, hatchery assistance, etc. in our state. The more club members in WCSFO, the more say0so the clubs have regarding sport fishing in Wisconsin. C.A.S.T., and offshoot organization of WCSFO handles Wisconsin tournament fishing ethics via educational materials.
A current example of what the bass clubs want in Wisconsin is to eliminate the 14” minimum size lime, as largemouth bass are the most prolific spawners of Wisconsin gamefish, plus the massive catch and release effort by bass anglers has contributed to a misbalance of gamefish in Wisconsin. The walleye population in many waters has suffered due to anglers keeping and eating the tasty walleyes but bass anglers returning the bass to eat young walleyes and other fish.
Regarding the election, all officers were reelected. Apparently, they are doing something right for the Wisconsin and visiting state anglers and the fishery. The reelected officers are:
· President: John Durben, Green Bay Area Great Lakes Sport Fishing, (Past 2nd VP for GBAGLSF);
· Vice- President: Jim Schommer, Walleyes For Tomorrow (Past WFT President),
· Secretary: L.A. Van Veghel, Wisconsin Fishing Club, Ltd., secretary & media director, Milwaukee Fishing Examiner & Wisconsin editor for MidWest outdoors magazine &
· Treasurer: Cornell Stroik, Wisconsin Tournament Bass Federation, WBTF.
