Wisconsin Conservation Lobby Day 2012 goal: Stop the Open-Pit Mining Bill

Wisconsinites who have concerns about the Open-Pit Mining Bill being debated in our State Legislature have a special opportunity to become educated about topic and to share concerns with their State Senators. On February 16th, Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters (WLCV) invites you to join them at the Capitol Building in Madison for Conservation Lobby Day to stop the Open-Pit Mining Bill. The bill's fate will be decided by members of the State Senate. At this point, the WLCV does not have clear information about whether Senators will vote on the Assembly version of the bill (AB 426) or if they will be writing entirely new legislation. Constituents from Milwaukee, Racine, Bayfield, Spooner and every region of the State are needed to send a message to legislators about their responsibility to care for the health of our land and water.

AB 246 has been criticized as being authored by the mining company and being packed with roll backs of environmental standards. The bill essentially asks the industry to act with reduced oversight and set the default for environmental safeguards as best governed by the mining company itself.

According to Matt Dannenberg, WLCV Central Wisconsin Organizer,

The Assembly Open-Pit Mining Bill (AB 426) fails the citizens of Wisconsin by removing protections for human health and our natural resources for the benefit of one out‐of‐state mining company. To make matters worse, the bill also takes away citizens’ rights to participate in protecting their communities
