The lights are up and bright! The athletes are here! Winter X Games 2012 is underway in Aspen, CO at Buttermilk Mountain. This year's event opened on a somber note with the passing of one of the innovators in the sport of women's skiing. Sarah Burke succumbed to her injuries on January 19, 2012. Burke, 29, injured herself while training in the halfpipe in Park City, Utah on January 10. Burke, a Canadian, is credited with pushing the envelope of women's skiing and helping to get halfpipe skiing into the 2014 Winter Olympics. Athletes have been wearing purple ribbons and red Sarah stickers in her honor. There was a tribute to Sarah on the first night of the games.
