Winter weather storm moves up into North East and cancels flights at airports. A winter weather storm will move up into the North East Saturday, after moving through North Carolina, Washington DC, West Virginia, and Virginia yesterday.
The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for several East Coast metropolitan areas. 12-20 inches of snow is expected in some areas. The Governor of Virginia declared a state of emergency Friday as a winter storm dumped snow across the state, and the winter storm caused 335 car accidents in the state on Friday. Several counties in North Carolina reported more than 170 car accidents Friday.
The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings and blizzard conditions for Washington DC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia on Saturday. Many people throughout Pennsylvania and New York have been trying to get the last minute Christmas shopping in before the snow begins to fall heavily.
Snow is anticipated to create problems from Virginia to Pennsylvania, leaving interstates 95, 81, 64 and possibly 80 covered in snow, CNN meteorologist Chad Meyers said. Meyers recommends that if you live along the east coast that you stay home this weekend if at all possible.
If the winter storm stays on course, several East Coast areas are anticipating some of the highest snowfall accumulations ever; while other cities expect the biggest snowfall since a winter storm in 2003. Throughout the east coast, the National Weather Service is reporting that some areas may get 20 inches, while areas only 50 miles away will not get any snow.
Many airports near the east coast have reported delays of two hours or more Saturday morning, with additional delays expected throughout Saturday and Sunday. Some flights have been cancelled. Airlines are asking travelers from around the country to check online or call to see if delays or cancelled flights are scheduled. Delays have been issued at the following airports: Pittsburg, Dulles, Philadelphia, Reagan, and Baltimore Washington, JFK, Richmond, DCA, Newark, among others.
