The National Weather Service has proclaimed this week as Winter Weather Awareness/Preparedness week in the state of Mississippi.
While winter weather is not as common across the South, snow and or ice, and extreme cold weather can occur and it is important that every family and or household prepare for whatever the Winter 2009/2010 may throw our way.
Over the past several years, winter weather events have been rather frequent in the state of Mississippi.
In a matter of fact, parts of the state have received wintry weather in the form of snow and or ice, 8 out of the last 9 years and or since 2000!!
In 2008 alone, there were 4 minor to significant winter weather events during the Winter Season, from light freezing rain to heavy snowfall.
And with an El Nino pattern ongoing through the Winter Season, winter weather threats actually increase across the state. (Accuweather Winter Weather Outlook)
The Jackson Weather Examiner will review winter weather safety and significant winter storms of the past that have impacted the state of Mississippi as Winter Weather Awareness Week continues.
[Note: Winter Weather Awareness/Preparedness Week for the following states : Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, Indiana, Ohio, Georgia, Illinois, and Kansas (Winter Weather Awareness Day in Kentucky and Missouri on November 18th)]
