Winter Weather Advisory issued for Denver as rain and snow approach

A quick-moving but moisture laden and powerful storm system will impact the Colorado Front Range and mountains today. Advisories and warnings have been issued but the good news is that the weekend will see a return to drier and warmer conditions.

For the Denver metro area, a Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from 3:00 p.m. this afternoon until 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning. The National Weather Service is warning of the potential for 2 to 6 inches in town with higher amounts to the south and west.

Some rain and rain mixed with snow will be possible this morning and into the first part of the afternoon. It will then become more widespread and by about 2:00 p.m. is expected to transition to all snow before easing after 10:00 p.m.

The snowfall forecast for the Denver area is far from certain as much is going to depend on temperatures and the timing of the transition to snow. It is possible we see less than expected and even a chance to see more. This system is quite complicated and difficult to pin down.

Assuming things play out as expected however, the Friday afternoon rush hour could be a messy one with heavy, wet snow on the ground.

Up in the high country, a Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the central and northern mountain areas. In effect from 8:00 a.m. this morning to 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning, the warning cautions that from 6 to 12 inches snow will be possible.

Heavy snowfall rates will deliver a good dose of snow in short period of time. Roads in the mountains are expected to become icy and snowpacked and travel will be impacted.

The good news is that this system will be moving out just as quickly as it is arriving. By early Saturday morning the Denver area will begin to see clearing skies.

Temperatures on Saturday will remain a bit colder than normal due to the expected snow cover on the ground. Sunday looks to be very spring-like with highs into the mid to upper 60s.
