Updated at 9 p.m.
A wave of low pressure will ride along a stalled frontal boundary tonight producing an area of light snow and mixed frozen precipitation.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for counties southeast of interstate 71 where nearly all of the wintry weather will occur. A mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will fall across this area overnight.
Accumulations will be light with this weather system but the timing could mean significant impacts on the morning commute. A half to one inch of snow is expected southeast of the interstate 71 corridor between Cincinnati and Columbus. Some of these areas include Chillicothe, Cambridge, and Athens. For a full view of the forecast, see the forecast map in the slideshow at the top of this page.
With dry air holding precipitation farther southeast than earlier expected, downtown Columbus may see very little if any snow. However, any light snow at all can still cause some slick spots to develop on the roads. Any small shift in the track of this system could lead to slightly lower or higher snow and ice amounts. Stay with examiner.com for updates this evening and tomorrow morning.
Farther south, more freezing rain and thus slightly higher ice accumulations will be likely. Up to one tenth of an inch of ice glaze may occur which could cause very poor road conditions by early morning.
School delays and travel problems will be likely in the hardest hit areas tomorrow morning. Expect to use extra time if you will be heading out before 9 a.m. in these locations Temperatures will climb above freezing by late morning allowing any ice on the roads to melt. Highs will top out in the upper 30s under mostly cloudy skies Wednesday afternoon.
The rest of the week will be dry. We will catch a brief warm up into the 40 s by the first half of the weekend. Enjoy that while it lasts because a major arctic air outbreak is still looking likely by the beginning of next week.
