Traveling on highways in good weather can be dangerous when sharing the road with large trucks. During the winter, an added problem comes from the snow. The size of a standard 18 wheeler inhibits the ability to clean off the roof of the trailer. So packed snow, and a crusted glaze can pose a dager with little time to respond. At highway speeds, air can dislodge chunks of snow and ice, and lift it over the trucks roof onto the traffic behind the vehicle. This can carry the force of a falling boulder and crush a windsheild, let alone a car. The biggest danger can come not after a storm, but a truck that traveled from a stormy location to yours. This can make the danger even more surprising. It is recommended to stay keep a safe distance of at least 5 car lengths on the highway, or do your best to avoid staying near a truck for very long.
