Often individuals and families will not be as active during the cold winter months due to the colder weather. While there are many beautiful winter days, often the snow and wind can make the outdoors very unfriendly. If you are interested in getting outdoors to enjoy the weather and keep yourself and your family active, Winter Walk Day is a great place to start!
On Wednesday, February 6, 2013 many Albertans across the province will make an effort to walk for 15 minutes, whether it is to school or work, or even just a stroll with friends and family members. For some individuals walking outside may not be an option due to extreme cold weather that can be unpredictable or due to physical limitations with the snow covered walks and ice patches. Do not be discouraged, but rather do your Winter Walk indoors instead! Keeping active and healthy is the main focus and no matter where you walk, you are benefiting your health.
Walking has many positive aspects. While building your muscle tissue and bones, it can also help build up your cardiovascular health by giving you more energy and warding off fatigue. Walking is a low impact activity that virtually anyone can do in any weather, any place. All you need is a good pair of walking shoes and comfortable, warm clothes and you are ready!
Be sure to check out your local school or community hall for any organized Winter Walks in your area. If you cannot find a group, trying starting one! You will meet new friends and have a great time being active in your community.
