When thinking of the holidays, shiny, colorful decorations may come to mind. However, this year may be a bit different for nail polish lovers. Rather than ringing in the New Year with gold and silver glitter polish or an extra glossy top coat, try a mattifying clear coat on top of a regular nail varnish or use a matte finish polish.
Matte varnish can look classy and edgy, incorporating variation to a usually smooth, polished nail. Adding nail art to a non glossy canvas allows you to play with texture. You can have better contrasted drawings or, if you have to have glitter, make sparkles stand out against a lackluster background. Don’t be afraid to experiment with matte colors. It won’t make your nails look dull!
You can buy O.P.I.’s matte top coat at Ulta. This popular high end brand is known for its great quality. A drugstore alternative is NYC’s Matte Me Crazy! which is a fraction of the price of higher end products. This can be found in most drugstores.
Another way to achieve matte nails is add a bit of cornstarch to a clear top coat. The more cornstarch you use, the more matte the polish will appear; however, too much cornstarch may make the consistency of the polish too thick. You can use steam to mattify regular nail polish during the drying process as well.
