Winter travel: Prepare for your trip and needed supplies

Travelers should have a trip plan whether it’s your travel route on your daily commute to work or making a trip out of town. Give a copy of the plan to a friend or relative and follow up with a phone call to let them know you arrived safe. Drivers should always be prepared for winter weather.

Consider your personal needs, as well as, your vehicles needs. One of the most important personal needs is medication. Pack extra medicines needed if stranded in cold weather. Always keep auto supplies in your car for daily emergencies.

Auto supplies:

Flashlight with extra batteries
Jumper cables for starting a dead battery
5 lb (A-B-C) type fire extinguisher
Compass and road maps
Tire repair kit and hand pump
Flares and reflective emergency triangles
Kitty litter for traction
Tow rope
Battery Combo Pack (Air compressor, electrical outlet, booster cables.)
First aid kit and manual

Weather related supplies:

NOAA weather radio (battery powered with extra batteries) or hand crank.
Candle in metal can (for safety)
Blankets or sleeping bags
Bottled water
High-energy snacks like granola bars, raisins or peanut butter.
GPS/Cell phone
Extra dry clothes
Pen and paper
Red bandana or cloth (tie to car antenna if you need help)

During your trip stay alert to the city, location and mile marker or exit numbers. Global positioning systems are great for navigating roads and have a handy compass. It is important to know that GPS can be wrong follow up with a map when something just seems out of the way.

GPS satellites can fix your location when traveling in winter. Global satellite linking will show you where you are positioned via the map screen and your precise latitude and longitude. If you have your coordinates help can find you within a few feet.
