Between the majestic Alps and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea on a narrow coastal strip, with the sophisticated French Riviera to the west and the stunning Italian Riviera to the east, lies the tiny principality of Monaco. Monaco is the second smallest independent state in the world, behind only the Vatican, and is nearly exclusively urban. This small country is divided into four areas: Monaco-Ville (the old city), Monte-Carlo (business and recreation), the Condamine (port quarter), and Fontvieille (recreation and light industry). This charming state has become a spectacular tourist resort as it has no other natural resources to boast of besides its attractive location and mild Mediterranean climate.
Although the winter weather is cooler and tends to be a little wetter, there is rarely a frost or any snow. Instead, this small principality enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine! The average high in the month of February is around 60 ̊. This is actually a rather busy month in the state of Monaco as it hosts the International Television Festival and executives from all over the world travel here to discuss all aspects of the television industry.
Monaco is filled with museums, galleries, religious sites, art venues, and even one of the most renowned exotic gardens. The Jardin Exotique is full of rare plants and flowers and from the very top of the beautiful garden, you can view the tiny arched passageways of the village below, stone alleyways, ancient fountains, and the enchanting Mediterranean waterfront. The Place du Casino is located in the center of Monte Carlo and is a must see not only for its many gaming rooms, but for its unbelievable decorative splendor. You can also visit the Opera to enjoy one of the many dance or orchestral performances and to witness the 18 ton gilt-bronze chandelier and extravagant frescoes that line the walls. Or if you need a more relaxing way to spend your day, you can visit the Les Thermes Marins de Monte Carlo, or the Sea Baths of Monte Carlo. This magnificent spa has a seawater therapy treatment center that stretches between the famed Hotel de Paris and the Hermitage.
Whatever your winter getaway desires may be, Monaco is truly a tourist haven offering a variety of places and activities to enjoy during your vacation. The best part about traveling to this sunny state in the winter—the hotel and airline rates are cheaper and the crowds of tourists are at a minimum.
