Winter Storm Watch: Ice and snow for the Middle Atlantic region on Wednesday

Fresh on the heels of a winter storm that produced significant snowfall from northern Maryland, across Pennsylvania, and over to New Jersey and New York City, winter storm watches are already posted for many locations in anticipation of a new storm that will bring another round of heavy snow and ice to these same locations by Wednesday. On the southern periphery of the storm, freezing rain will be more of a concern than snowfall. This includes areas to the north and west of Baltimore and Washington, northern Maryland, and southern Pennsylvania. As low pressure moves northeast out of the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday night and Wednesday, warmer air will rise over cold air at the surface and produce widespread freezing rain. The current thinking is that freezing rain may accumulate up to one-quarter inch. Areas to the south and east of Washington and Baltimore may experience a brief period of sleet and/or freezing rain with a light glaze of ice before the precipitation changes to rain on Wednesday as a southerly flow develops around the center of low pressure. Farther to the north, precipitation will fall into much colder air and will take the form of snow across central and northern Pennsylvania where at least 4 to 8 inches (with locally higher amounts) may accumulate by Wednesday evening. New York City is currently under a Winter Storm Watch for 4 to 8 inches of snow and up to one-half inch of ice. Although no advisories have been posted for central or southern New Jersey as of 9 p.m. this evening, these areas may also be impacted by the storm.
