Winter Storm Warnings and Watches in effect on Friday for

portions Northern Mississippi.

Previous Articles

The National Weather Service has upgraded parts of a previously issued Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning on Friday for portions of Northern Mississippi.

The Winter Storm Warning includes the cities of Southaven, Olive Branch, Tunica and Corinth.

A major winter storm was continuing to unfold across New Mexico, Western Texas and Oklahoma Thursday afternoon and evening.

Over 57,000 were without power late Thursday afternoon due to ice accumulations up to 1 inch on power lines in Oklahoma.

Widespread power outages were also reported across Northwestern Texas and Interstate 40 eastbound from Tucumcari, New Mexico and US 54 from Tucumcari, New Mexico to the Texas state line were shut down due to ice and snow covered roads..

This winter storm will track to the east along the Interstate 40 corridor across Arkansas and Tennessee Thursday night into Friday with heavy snow, freezing rain and sleet all likely.

Northern Mississippi will be on the southern edge of the main area of wintry precipitation but accumulations of ice and sleet appear likely.

An arctic cold shallow airmass will continue to funnel into portions of Northern Mississippi through the overnight with low temperatures dropping to around freezing by mid to late Friday morning.

Meanwhile a low pressure system will track across Louisiana and Southern Mississippi, spreading rain across the state Friday morning with a changeover to freezing rain and sleet during the mid to late morning in the warning area.

High temperatures will likely hover around freezing through the day on Friday before plummeting well down into the 20s Friday night.

Significant ice and sleet accumulations over one quarter inch are possible.

In addition, northeast winds of 15 to 20 mph along with the freezing rain could cause tree limbs and branches to snap, resulting in power outages.

As the colder airmass deepens during the late afternoon and evening on Friday, the freezing rain and sleet will change over to a period of light snow with minor accumulations likely.

Any ice and snow accumulations will likely remain through the weekend as a arctic airmass settles in across the state.

Temperatures in the Winter Storm Warning area  will remain near to below freezing through Monday morning.  This could lead to an extended period of hazardous travel with the non-melting of snow and or ice.

HIGH FREEZING RAIN THREAT
HIGH SLEET THREAT
LOW SNOW THREAT

                                                                                                                               Noon on Friday (NWS)

WINTER STORM WARNING COUNTIES:  Alcorn, Benton, DeSoto, Marshall, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica

WINTER STORM WATCH COUNTIES:  Coahoma, Lafayette, Panola, Prentiss, Quitman, Union

Areas south of the Winter Storm Warning area and north of the Interstate 20 corridor in Central Mississippi could see a brief change over to freezing rain and sleet as the colder airmass continues to filter across the state late Friday night if any precipitation remains, but no major travel problems are expected at this time.

The overall threat apart from the winter storm in Northern Mississippi on Friday will be from heavy rain.

Many areas will likely receive 1 to 2 inches of rainfall with locally higher amounts.  Soils remain saturated from heavy rains over the past week.  This could lead to some localized flooding problems by Friday afternoon and evening.

The storm system should move out of the state by Saturday morning but a very cold weekend is ahead with high temperatures only in the 30s and 40s with low temperatures in upper teens north to 20s south.

This is an ever-changing weather situation and everyone should continue to monitor the latest developments with this winter storm in Northern Mississippi.
