A winter storm is set to unfold across southern Mississippi through the day on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) upgraded previously issued winter storm watches to warnings on Monday, detailing the likely possibility of significant accumulations of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

The winter storm warnings cover 23 counties including Adams, Amite, Covington, Forrest, Franklin, George, Greene, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson Davis, Jones, Lamar, Lawrence, Lincoln, Marion, Pearl River, Perry, Pike, Stone, Walthall, Wayne and Wilkinson.

"Snow and sleet accumulations of one to three inches will be possible. Some freezing rain could be mixed in during the morning, especially in the Highway 98 corridor," the NWS said.

A winter weather advisory has also been issued further north to cover 12 additional counties including Claiborne, Clarke, Copiah, Hinds, Jasper, Jefferson, Lauderdale, Newton, Rankin, Scott, Simpson and Smith. In these areas, which includes portions of the Jackson metro, up to one inch of snow is likely.

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing during the entirety of this winter storm event, resulting in extremely dangerous travel conditions.

The wintry precipitation is expected to wind down during the late afternoon and evening with temperatures forecast to plunge to some of their lowest levels of the winter season so far in the teens across much of the state.

This is a developing weather situation and everyone is strongly advised to stay updated on the latest information as it becomes available.
