Winter snowshoeing in Lake Tahoe: 5 tips for beginners

Would you like to experience the wintery mountains of Lake Tahoe without all the hustle and bustle of a crowded ski resort? Snowshoeing in Lake Tahoe offers just that. The tranquil back country surrounding Lake Tahoe is waiting for you, along with stunning views and snowy forests. Below is a list of five tips to help you get you started.

1. Know the Basics

Be sure to understand the basic techniques of snowshoeing. Read this article, or watch this YouTube video and learn how to get-up, turn-around, stamp, edge, climb/descend, and how to break a new trail.

2. Use Good Equipment

Buy or rent suitable snowshoes. Use smaller snowshoes in wet, compact snow. Larger snowshoes should be used in powder snow. Use trekking poles to help with your balance.

3. Fuel the Body

Drink plenty of water, and eat foods high in calories and high in fat. This will provide your body energy and warmth.

4. Dress in Layers

Use a light-weight non-cotton first layer that is made out of polypropylene or silk synthetic so that your body can breathe. The outer layer should both insulate and windproof (like Go-Tex).

5. Beware of Avalanches

Avalanches can occur in the mountains surrounding Lake Tahoe. Become educated on the hazardous terrain & snowpack that is associated with avalanches, and what the common triggers can be.
