There is no doubt about it, winter is here and causing dry, itchy skin that flakes. Soothe the dryness this winter with the following skincare advice.

Long Island winters bring dry, itchy and scaly skin that flakes. Although rough winter skin may be most visible on exposed areas such as the lips, face or hands, irritation and dryness can occur on the entire body.

Major contributors of dry winter skin are low humidity, bitter cold, high winds and an increase in home heating. The following winter skincare advice offers a few simple procedures that will help to eliminate scaly and itchy skin and soothe the dryness of winter skin. (A medical professional should advise on rashes or dry patches that bleed).

To ease the dryness of winter skin, the best skincare advice for all seasons is to begin with hydrating the body from the inside out. Even though it is cold outside, consume at least eight glasses of water every day. When outdoors, cover as much skin as possible. Sleep with a cool mist humidifier or crack a window slightly. The dry air of the heat causes skin to lose moisture, specifically, exposed skin and the thin membrane within the nose, which is susceptible to scabbing and nose bleeds.

Moisturizers will not cure the dry and flaky skin of the winter, however they can protect and replenish. When shopping, determine the severity of the dryness and apply moisturizers accordingly in this order: serum, lotion, cream. If flaking and scaling are also an issue look for an exfoliating facial cleanser, body wash or bath salts and loofah to rid the dryness. Excessive exfoliation is not optimal, therefore only use when necessary. Petroleum jelly has both healing and protective properties and is perfect for correcting dry, red and chapped lips and hands.

Bedtime is the best time to soothe the dryness of winter skin. Chapped and cracked lips can be repaired by applying petroleum jelly in the evening before bed and prior to heading out into the elements. Smooth petroleum jelly on the hands and cover with white linen gloves or white linen socks for overnight skin healing.

When moisturizing the body, do not forget to cover the elbows and knees and try to apply a heavy cream at least twice a day, the thicker the moisturizer the better the outcome.

CleanLogic offers inexpensive, environmentally friendly bath and body care, perfect for winter skincare and can be found online or on Long Island at Walgreens in Elmont, Franklin Square, Hewlett and Oceanside.

This winter skincare advice should not be mistaken for medical advice, but will help to alleviate irritated skin and soothe the dryness caused by the harsh elements of the season.
