Winter skin care for allergy sufferers

Winter weather here in Columbus can do a number on your skin. Chapping, dryness, flaking and cracks are common, especially in frequently exposed areas of your skin including your lips and hands.

For those with allergies to common ingredients in skincare products, protecting your skin from these injuries can be difficult. Here are some options to keep your skin healthy and moisturized even in the roller coaster weather Columbus is going through this winter:

  • After bathing or showering, rub some olive oil into your skin. Whatever olive oil you already have is just fine. After rubbing in the oil, cover up that skin with a glove, socks or other cotton clothing. This works best when done right before you go to bed, giving the oil time to soak in.
  • For deep cracks, try shortening. Yes, such as Crisco. It sounds disgusting, but the fats will protect your skin and keep moisture in after you bathe. Like with the olive oil, cover up your skin after you apply the shortening.
  • Remember to apply a lip protector that includes sunscreen. Even in cloudy Columbus, your lips can get a sunburn in the winter.
  • Use natural soaps without fragrances or chemical additives.
  • Bathe in warm, not hot water.
