Winter in Santa Fe: A special time to visit

Visitors throng to Santa Fe in the summer but question whether or not they should go in winter. Locals know that winter is one of the most beautiful times of the year to be in Santa Fe. And, Christmas is the highlight of the winter season.

Yes It Snows
Santa Fe is high desert, 7,000 feet, in fact. So when the storms come through, Santa Fe usually gets some snow. While there are times that snow accumulates and roads are difficult to pass, the usual scenario is that the snow comes, beautifies the city and then melts. Of course, some of the winter months are cold and your down coat and sturdy boots will come in handy while walking through town.

If you ski, you'll be pleased to know that Ski Santa Feis only 15 miles up the mountain from downtown Santa Fe.

Winter Shows
Cold weather doesn't keep the artists from displaying their work. Two big indoor shows, held at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center are the Winter Indian Market and Winter Indian Market. Both juried shows, they display excellent and collectible art in an intimate setting where you can enjoy meeting the artists.

Christmas in the City of Faith
Santa Fe means Holy Faith in Spanish. Santa Fe goes all out for Christmas. There are special concerts in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis, beautifully decorated stores and the, highlight, Christmas Eve bonfires and farolitos on Canyon Road.

Local Santa Fean, Susan Weber has published a beautiful book illustrating the wonders of Christmas in Santa Fe. It can be ordered online or picked up at her Christmas Shop.

Where to Stay
For convenience and a worry-free visit to Santa Fe, stay downtown, near the Plaza in one of the historic hotels. You'll not have to walk far to see the lights in the Plaza, dine at one of the excellent Santa Fe restaurants or enjoy shopping the quaint shops and boutiques.

A Typical Winter Day
We took a walk through Santa Fe the day after a snowstorm. The snow was melting, the shops were opening and visitors were out shopping and enjoying the day.

Our Photo Gallery will take you by Rosario Cemetery, and in to town through the Plaza and Cathedral Park. On this winter day, the Native American vendors were setting up under the Portal at the Palace of the Governors and visitors were warming themselves by the fire in the lobby of La Fonda.

Santa Fe is beautiful in the winter. Enjoy the Photo Tour.
