A drastic change weatherwise is to take shape across the Chicago area over the next 24 hours. Winter is set to return to the region after a day of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms fueled by record-breaking warmth. The storm system that produced today's thunderstorms and heavy rainfall will continue to lift northeast out of the region. On Wednesday, Chicago will be on the backside (or cool side) of the storm system. Temperatures will start off in the 40s on Wednesday and plunge into the 20s and teens in the evening with rain changing over to snow from west to east. Snow is expected to accumulate but on the light side with the heaviest accumulations occurring northwest across north-central Illinois. Anywhere from a dusting to 2 inches is expected on Wednesday over northeast and north-central Illinois. Blustery conditions will make it feel even colder. The arctic chill really settles over the region from Wednesday night through Friday night. High temperatures Thursday and Friday will only make it in the teens with overnight lows in the single digits and wind chill values below zero. Friday night into Saturday, a clipper system could bring another batch of light snow into the region.
