Winter outlook according to the Farmers' Almanac

Now that Autumn/Fall is here, what might be in store for the upcoming Winter 2009-2010 according to the Farmer's Almanac.

The Farmers’ Almanac warns a very cold and or  bitterly cold winter is possible in the Great Lakes, Plains, and South Central states, while temperatures on the East and West Coasts will be more in line with average to normal winter conditions.

Residents of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states can expect some major snowfalls in mid-February, with possible blizzard conditions in New England.

The almanac also calls for wetter than normal  weather conditions in conjunction with colder than normal weather conditions across the South, including the state of Mississippi.

Although the Farmers' Almanac does not take into account factors, such as the NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation)  or  the ENSO (El-Niño Southern Oscillation), the long range forecast overall falls in line with what we typically expect across the South with an ongoing El Niño phenomenon, which will have an impact on the upcoming winter.

The Farmers' Almanac,  which has been published since 1818, issues annual forecasts using a formula based on sunspots, planetary positions and the effects of the moon.

The Farmers' Almanac editors claim- 85 percent accuracy for their predictions.
