Many people find winter frustrating. They feel that the cool weather and long nights keep them indoors, away from their favorite activities. Winter can be a great time for family togetherness though. Instead of hibernating in front of the T.V. this winter, why not cuddle up together as a family for some quality together time?
Family Reading Nights are a great way to foster a love of reading in children and create a wonderful family tradition that is remembered for years to come. It's simple, really.
Step 1: Get the family together.
Step 2: Read!
Of course it would be great if you could spend the whole evening reading together. However, the benefits are great even if you just have 30 minutes. You can read one book out loud together as a family - a parent can read, or you can take turns reading. You can also just spend quiet time together all reading your own books silently. Just be sure to be actually reading. Digital distractions abound, but it is the parent modeling reading that will really hit home for your kids.
A fun variation of Family Reading Night is Family Story Night. Stories from books are fine for Family Story Night, but why not mix it up by making up your own stories to tell from time to time? Classic stories from literature are fair game, but your children will really enjoy stories from your childhood or theirs. Try your hand at making up a story, or try a story round where the whole family makes up a story - each person picking up where the last left off.
Whether you read or tell stories, winter is a great time to get together as a family to share your love of stories and each other.
