Winter guide to contemporary dance in Pittsburgh

Don't miss the incredible local and national dance talent coming to various Pittsburgh stages this winter. With show styles ranging from contemporary ballet to Brazilian hip-hop to improvisation, there is something for everyone. Below is just some of what is happening, January through early March.

Attack Theatre presents “Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier’s Tale)” at the George R. White Studio, Strip District. The show runs February 23rd, 26th, 27th, and March 1st at 7:30 p.m. $35 is the suggested donation. Click HERE for more information.

The Kelly Strayhorn Theater has quite a lineup this winter, beginning in February. On February 1st at 8:00 p.m., Gia Cacalano and Mana Kawamura perform the sixth annual Next Stage Dance Residency. On February 7th at 8:00 p.m., Alan Obuzor of Texture Contemporary Ballet will present work at the KST’s newer series, Fresh Works. The show will be held at the Alloy Studios. Cost is $10. Click HERE for more information, and purchasing.

On February 21st and 22nd at 8:00 p.m., Baker & Tarpaga Dance Project will bring “Beautiful Struggle” to the KST main stage. Ticket prices range from $15-$25. Click HERE for more information, and purchasing.

On March 7th and 8th at 8:00 p.m., Sidra Bell Dance New York will perform their world premiere of “garment.” The show will take place at the KST main stage. Tickets range from $15-$25. Click HERE for more information, and purchasing.

The Space Upstairs will host their monthly “Second Saturdays” throughout the winter, as well as an evening of music and dance with local jazz singer, Jessica Lee, and the Pillow Project performers. That happening will take place on January 18th, from 8:00-10:00 p.m. $10 is the suggested donation. Check their website for additional information, and two upcoming shows, “Hidden Tracks of a Pale Blue Jazz,” and “(a) Long Now.”

The New Hazlett Theater presents Beth Corning and artists in the 2014 Glue Factory production of “Recipes Our Mothers Gave Us.” The show runs January 15th-19th. Show times and ticket costs vary. Click HERE for more information, and purchasing.

Gia T. Presents premieres work in addition to her KST performance. Cacalano collaborates with a new ensemble and new artist at the Wood Street Galleries on February 7th and 8th at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $20. For advance reservations, email Gia at giatc3@yahoo.com.

The Pittsburgh Dance Council presents two shows this winter. On February 1st, Brazilian hip-hop company, Compagnie Kafig, will perform at the Byham Theater. The show runs that night only at 8:00 p.m. Ticket prices vary. Click HERE for more information, and purchasing.

On March 8th, the Byham Theater and PDC host Ballet du Grand Theatre de Geneve. This show also runs for one night only, 8:00 p.m. Ticket prices vary. Click HERE for more information, and purchasing.

Bodiography Contemporary Ballet will also grace the Byham Theater stage, February 21st and 22nd at 8:00 p.m. The company will present their latest ballet, “Left Leg, Right Brain.” Ticket prices vary. Click HERE for more information, and purchasing.
