Winter fun is underway in California mountains

California may be known for its beaches and sunshine, but it's the mountain snow that makes the golden state shine during the winter. Resorts throughout California are geared up with winter deals that include skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, ice skating, sledding and all sorts of snowy fun.

You'll find resort packages that include special mid-week rates, military or college student discounts, couples' getaways and family packages. Many resorts feature discounted accommodations packaged with discounted lift tickets.

Northstar in Truckee has a terrific package starting at $74 per person, per night based on double occupancy, plus when you book two nights, you get a third night free when you book a studio condo.

Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are saluting active military service members with free lift tickets Sunday through Friday, non-holiday (exclusion dates are January 18-19 and February 15-16).

Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are also offering college students the College Tahoe Super Pass at $419 to cover the entire ski season with no blackout dates. You must be a full-time college student (12 credits or more) during the 2013-2014 winter season and bring a photo ID and proof of 12 credits or more to pick up a pass.

Tahoe Donner is offering a spectacular package for all ages throughout January for National Learn to Ski or Snowboard Month. You'll find deeply discounted rates, which also include lessons, equipment rental, and full-day passes. This package is designated for first time skiers or snowboarders only.

Down in Southern California, skiers can find excellent deals such as the Family Package at Mountain High. For a single price of $89 you get one adult, eight-hour lift ticket; one child, eight-hour lift ticket, and two $10 meal vouchers. Throw in another $30 and get equipment rentals and a lesson with each ticket.

Over at the Big Bear resorts, skiers have a choice of mountain styles to choose from, and packages to fit the terrain. Snow Summit offers a more traditional Alpine downhill ski experience, while across the way at Bear Mountain you'll find a contemporary terrain popular with snowboarders and skiers alike.
