Winter escapes from Connecticut

It's cold, there's snow on the ground, more is forecasted and all you want to do is slide into some flip flops and find a way to stay warm. Don't fret, within a few hours of driving are three warm and entertaining destinations to spend a long weekend or even a short one.

Rocking Horse Ranch Resort (http://www.rockinghorseranch.com/index.php) in Highland, New York is a nice day drive through the hills and valleys to a warm and fun filled vacation close to home. RHR offers a weekend of adventure either in the snow or out of it for the entire family. Visit their constant eighty-five degree indoor water park highlighted by a 250 foot water slide, giant water buckets, and a water walk challenge. If you're up for winter activities, they offer skiing, sledding, tubing, horse riding, sleigh rides and ice skating. Rocking Horse Ranch is an all inclusive resort that has plenty of packages and special offers for kids and adults alike.

Great Wolf Lodge (http://www.greatwolf.com/poconos/waterpark) in the beautiful Pocono mountains of Pennsylvania is another all inclusive resort with an indoor water park. Great Wolf is wonderful for younger travelers as they offer a story time at the end of the day next to the fireplace in the lobby, MagiQuest, Scoops Ice Cream Spa and an arcade. The lodge has inclusive packages all year round and are mostly focused on indoor entertainment through those long cold winters. The pool area has a splash pond, several slides and small wading pools for the littlest swimmers.

Finally, Connecticut boasts of it's own indoor waterpark with CoCo Key (http://www.cocokeywaterbury.com/) in Waterbury. CoCo Key is an attractive day escape with the children as it appears in most of our backyards. Centrally located in Waterbury, it is attached to a hotel that makes the staycation worth while. The eighty-four degree, fifty thousand square foot water park has several raft rides, a kiddie pool, a large water slide and offers pizza and root beer pool side. Moms and dads don't have to leave the area to find something to eat. If you choose to stay at the resort the hotel has packages year round that combine the CoCo Key and the hotel into an attractive local staycation option.

Near or far, where ever you are, you are sick of the snow. Take a few days during the extended weekend and head for a local indoor water park, tuck your feet in the warm water and enjoy swimsuit weather while we wait for spring to arrive in the Northeast. There are several indoor resorts and waterparks that offer day passes or whole vacations not more than a six hour ride from Connecticut.
