Winter crafts for children: Doily snowflakes

Winter time is here. Many Bangor area children are spending more of their free time inside. Making winter crafts with their children is a good way for parents to spend time with their kids. The following snowflake craft is easy and fun for the whole family.

Materials:

There is a chance that the materials needed to make this craft are already available at home. If not, the supplies can be purchased at any of the Bangor area Dollar Tree stores. The following materials are needed for this craft:

Round paper doilies

Scissors

Blue fine tipped markers

Newspaper

Heavy books

Pencil (optional)

Directions:

There are only a few steps for this craft. Parents may want to help children use the scissors. The pencil is only needed if designs will be drawn on the doilies before cutting. The following are the directions for this craft:

  • Choose a place where the family can sit and have the supplies put out in front of them. The kitchen table is usually a good place. Line the surface with newspaper and place the materials on top of the paper.
  • Give each family member (including you) a doily. Fold the doilies in half to make a half circle. Fold them in half again to make a cone shape and then, fold them in half a third time to make a smaller cone.
  • If necessary, use the pencil to draw a design on the doily cone. The top of the cone will already have a design so it cutting in that area is not needed. Cut designs from the solid part of the doilies.
  • Unfold the doilies and place them on the table. Use books to weigh down the snowflakes and leave the books there for a few minutes to press the doilies flat. Remove the books.
  • Use the blue markers to color the edges of the designs that were cut from the doilies. Also color the outer edges of the snowflakes. If you want, you can even color some of the designs that were already on the doilies. Hang the snowflakes around the home and use them as winter decorations.
