Now that the holidays are officially behind us the cold weather might not seem so quaint anymore, right? However, there are still options of places to visit that are warm, warmer and warmest. Think south of the border and look at the prices that airlines are offering during the lull between the holidays and spring break in March.
Marriot’s Cancun Experience
In Cancun you won’t ever feel as snug and at home as at one of the Marriott properties. I stayed at both the Casa Magna Cancun Resort and the JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa. Both resorts offer premium dining and the first night was at Sasi Thai, traditional Thai favorites and cocktails under moon with a Cancun breeze reminding me I was in paradise.
An option for one day excursion is visiting the Whale sharks, which according to my colleagues who took the trip is not for a motion sick girl (whew, glad I didn’t go). If you can handle it it’s the excursion of a lifetime. Whale sharks are seen in the waters around Cancun from May to September during their yearly migration. You can get up close and personal with these amazing and gentle creatures reaching up to 40-feet long and one of the biggest animal species in the world and the planet’s largest fish.
The meals just kept getting better and on my second night I was hosted at La Capilla Argentina Steakhouse followed by cocktails at Very Wine. The Steakhouse specialties features the finest cuts of meat and seafood options and also boasts an international wine cave with 200 different labels.
After two nights at the Casa Magna Cancun Resort I toodled on over to the AAA 5-diamond JW Marriot for two more nights of rest and relaxation. This property was all about the spa experiences and with my friends in tow and the unseasonable rain outside we spent the better part of two days lounging and enjoying massages and facials. After all, the spa is 35,000 square-feet and I wanted to explore every inch.
The spa is Mayan inspired, just like the area of Cancun and in that tradition offers traditional treatments taught from generation to generation. Unfolding the mysteries of the culture as you’re being pampered and cocooned in the serenity of the spa you can choose from facials, massages, or body treatments.
Standouts include the Mayan Herbal Exfoliation using a blend of native herbs, oats and herbal oils applied and massaged into the skin. The Hyradermie facial is excellent for mature skin and offers the latest advances in skincare and ionization and high frequency.
Finally to my dismay it was my last dinner, which was even more relaxing at Gustino’s on the property. This one is a black dress affair and its Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. The specialties include handcrafted pasta and fresh fish along with a romantic tinge to the evening ala candelight.
Cancun has heaps of options for places to stay, sure, but none as focused on well-being and good service as these two Marriott gems, no need to look any further.
