Winter can be a long and dreary season with frequent snowstorms and confinement to the home. Travel is often reduced and activities are hard to find. When the weather permits spend a day or afternoon in Collinsville,Connecticut a place with many activities during the dreary winter days.

For those that like history and antiques a stop at the Canton Historical Society makes for an interesting afternoon trip. The lower level has farming equipment, a bandstand and ice harvesting history. The main level has barbershop, cast iron coffin, children's room with games and toys, textiles, medicine, post office and other artifacts. The friendly guides there will tell you the history of the town. The third floor has Farmington Valley Railroad Museum, Victorian clothing and historical photos. It is open Saturday and Sunday in the winter from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors, and $1 for children 6-16.

The Canton Historical Society has a walking trail map. The town has plenty of areas for walking when weather permits in winter. It is a great location to walk, run, and bike. Stop at the LaSalle Market for something to eat. They have a great selection of sandwiches, wraps, pizza, desserts, soft drinks, coffee and tea. Enjoy breakfast, lunch or early dinner. They are open seven days a week to about 5 to 6 p.m. depending on the day. Every Friday from 6 p.m. to 9:45 they have local talent shows. On the last Saturday of the month they have Band Jam Night from 7a.m. to 11 p.m.

If you a gardener stop at the Riverside Nursery and Garden Center to get a head start on spring. Most often you can walk there after you park the car in the many lots in town. A short walk over the bridge they have many quality flowers, trees, shrubs, organic products and solutions to your gardening problems. They are a florist too if you need flowers for a special event. Browsing through a garden center in winter is a refreshing change.

Collinsville has many interesting places to shop. For those that like antiques there is the Antiques on Farmington with many dealers with wide assortment of glassware, furniture, clocks, art , jewelry and more.
