To me there is no bread in the world that screams out flavor and health than this bread from the great heartland of America, Whole Wheat Honey Bread. Not only is it a great bread just to eat on its own, it is the base for some great sandwiches!
Everyone is well aware of the fact that whole wheat is very good for you. Everyone is well aware of the fact that honey is indeed one of nature's wonder foods. When you add the two together, you get a bread which you can eat guilt-free, enjoy to the nth degree and it is fun and easy to prepare.
From the kitchen of Casa de Cuisine to your winter kitchen, I hope you enjoy this slice of Americana!
Ingredients needed to make Whole Wheat Honey Bread (makes 1 loaf):
- 4 ½ cups whole wheat flour
- 2 ½ tsp. yeast
- 1 tsp. salt
- ¾ cup water
- ¾ cup milk
- ¼ cup honey
- 3 Tbs. corn oil
Steps:
-
In a large bowl whisk together 1 ¾ cup wheat flour, yeast and salt.
- In a small saucepan over low heat combine the water, milk, honey and oil. Stir just until hot (meaning you can stick a finger in it without getting burned).
- Stir the milk mixture into the yeast mixture until smooth.
- Stir in the remaining wheat flour to form a dough.
- Place the dough on a floured surface and knead 5 minutes. Place the dough back into the bowl, cover and let rise 1 hour.
- Line the bottom of a 9x5 loaf pan with parchment paper.
- Punch the dough down. Place the dough on a floured surface and knead 2 minutes. Place the dough in the prepared pan and let rise 1 hour.
- Pre-heat oven to 375.
- Place in oven and bake 45 minutes.
- Remove the bread from the oven and let cool in pan 10 minutes. Remove from the pan and cool on a rack.
Chef's Note: If you have never worked with whole wheat flour be advised that it is different than usual white flour. In the case of this bread, the texture of the dough will be more coarse.
