Winter, to neo-pagans, is a time of rest and reflection.  We are supposed to spend this season of the year in spiritual quiet.  It is a time of introspection and to examine the soul. It just doesn't work out that way sometimes, though, does it?

Anything that can happen, happens in the winter, too.  Our busy, modern lives don't slow down because we have a spiritual need to do so.  It just seems that every time we sit down with a hot cup of tea to write in our journals or just think, the phone rings or there is a knock at the door.  LIfe doesn't like repose and reflection.  Life wants ACTION!

AND, that's why we need to make it a priority.  When someone calls, let it go to voicemail.  Answer the door and say, "I'm sorry, but I have to finish up something right now."  When interrupted say, "I love you and go away."  These are difficult things to say.  When someone asks you what you are doing, we often feel we have to justify our time with some productive and acceptable response.  If we say, "I am resting" it is not acceptable.  It is judged.

To bad!  Rest is important.  Turn off the tv.  Turn off the phone!  Put a Do-Not-Disturb sign on the door.  Lay in bed and rest!  It doesn't mean that's all you do.  It doesn't negate the laundry you have done or the pristine condition of your kitchen.  It doesn't undo the stack of paperwork you have finished.  If you have time to rest, don't fidget around looking for something else to fill your time.  REST!!!!

Winter has blown into our lives.  REST!  Turn down the lights, throw on a blanket for an afternoon nap, recharge, and be STILL.  Spring is just around the corner and you will have time enough then to fill every waking second with some important task.  In the meantime, be still.  Listen to the wind blowing snow outside your window.  Sleep and just BE.  rest.

I totally agree with you here, in fact this is what people are lacking in their lives, this is where most of our mental issues and health issues are coming from. Our modern world is a toxic world and people are living stressful because they are not taking time. I am Buddhist and this is the answer to the worlds stress and anxiety issues as well as depression and unhappiness. This is a great article and I love how you didn't sugar coat, good job.

Thank you so much for your comment! I think we can easily agree on the need to slow down in our lives. It gets complicated though when we start feeling the pressures - daily - to do MORE! MORE! MORE! Part of this is because we really don't recognize what all we do.

This is relevant in my life at the moment. I tend to stress and go and go and go until my body does something drastic and then I have to stop and rest. If I made time for resting during my life, this probably wouldn't be a problem.

    Great article!
