This time of year can be frustrating or wonderful when it comes to bass fishing. The weather plays a huge role in this, of course, but you do not have to let the weather keep you from potentially catching a trophy bass. What to use and what time of day to fish will help you catch more. There is no need at this time to get up early or stay out too late to catch bass. You want to fish in the middle of the day when it is warmest. This is the time that bass will be more likely to bite.
What to use to catch bass when the weather is warmer, but it is still cold is easy; use lures that will dive deep, like jigs and plastic worms. Using jigs with plastic tails or pig tails will enhance your lure to catch more fish. If you can actually see the bass swimming higher than they usually hang out this time of year that is good. You can use crankbaits that are medium divers. You can also use minnow lures, but you need to fish them on top of the water off of points and very slowly.
Another great thing that you can try is spoons. If you’re in a large pond or if you’re on the lake you just need to find what the bass are feeding on. When it is at the warmest part of the day, you can find the bait fish that they are chasing. Match the color to that and just set out a couple of rods with medium size spoons on them and either drift over brush or stay put and jig the spoons up and down, just above any drop offs or underwater structure. Any of these methods should land you some nice sized bass if you remain patient.
