Winter activities at Tom Sawyer offer variety

E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park, in Louisville, will offer three activities for those wanting a break from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

On Saturday, December 7, and Sunday, December 8, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. , the park will hold Parents Day Out-Holiday ‘Shop-portunity.’ Parents can take this opportunity to get some holiday shopping, wrapping, and baking done while children, ages 6-12, spend the time with park personnel doing holiday activities such as hiking, ornament making, or sipping hot chocolate.

The fee is $8.00 per child in advance or $10.00 at the door (space permitting). Space is limited and preregistration is highly suggested. The activities building will serve as the meeting and drop off place for this event.

The park will offer a Winter Birding Hike on Saturday, December 14, starting at 9:00 a.m. Participants will get a chance to learn about bird species that hang out in the Ohio River Valley during the winter. Park naturalist will discuss bird calls and songs and other information about winter birds. After the hike, hikers will make natural bird feeders from pine cones found along the hike.

The fee for the winter hike is $5.00 per person. No equipment is necessary but participants should dress for the weather. The hike will begin at the archery range.

For a touch of Christmas in the out-of-doors, the park will hold a Caching for Claus 2013: Overstuffed on Sunday, December 15, beginning at noon. Participants will use a GPS device to locate ‘gifts’ that have fallen out of Santa’s sleigh. Prizes will be awarded to those completing the list.

Cost of the caching outing is $5.00 per person with registration taking place at the activities building.

For more information about these events or any other event at “Tom” Sawyer, call the park at (502) 429-7270.

As the only state park within Metro Louisville, E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park is an oasis in the urban landscape.

The 580-acre E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park was once a farm worked by the former Central State Hospital, a mental health facility. Many remnants, such as barns and cemeteries, still remain on park property.

Recreational facilities at the park include hiking and fitness trails, an outdoor swimming pool, indoor gym, lacrosse and soccer fields, softball fields, archery range, and a BMX track. The Sawyer Hayes Community Center is available for group meetings and can be reserved by calling the park.

Located in eastern Jefferson County between Westport Road and LaGrange Road on Freys Hill Road, the park is convenient to the residents of Louisville and surrounding counties and easily found using Google Maps.
